Joe Root: “The right decision to resign from captain – for England and himself”

Joe Root was right to resign as England Test captain.

Root is doing the right thing and it’s the right thing to do for the team. It was necessary to make a change at top.

Although there was some argument that it should have happened after the Ashes loss in Australia, he was determined not to give up. They tried to do a “red-ball reset” in the West Indies, but that was clearly a failure.

The Caribbean tour had parts that were positive. It looked like an important step forward for England, until the third-Test chaos at Grenada, when they were blown apart. Root was no longer the skipper at that point.

Root is not to blame for the 1-0 series loss, but it was Root’s fault. Root looked exhausted. It was as if he had everything under his belt.

Captains, like football managers have a shelf-life. You reach a point where players stop listening to you, even though they may think so.

England Test captain is an all-day job. It is not possible to just close the door and turn off the television. It is a constant companion.

Root has been doing it for a while. Root has done his best and should return to the ranks to show his chirpy side and continue scoring runs.

It is remarkable that he has scored so much runs even though he is captain. He has done this while being a struggling captain trying to win the game.

Root has had it rough. Root has been in charge of England twice during his tenure in Australia. It has been a difficult ride because he has dealt with all the Covid complications – bio-secure bubbles and resting players –

There is no one in the place to do everything. The captaincy can’t be filled unless there is a coach or managing director. This just shows how bad the England and Wales Cricket Board is.

The immediate future of English cricket will be decided by the managing director.

Are they looking for a captain who can stay in the same position for four more years? Do they want a long-term captain, someone who can see themselves being in the position for four more years?

These decisions might take time but I believe that it is the best solution for now. Get someone in to captain four Tests against India and New Zealand.

Simply put, the number of candidates is so low that any long-term appointment is impossible.

If he is healthy enough, someone like Ben Stokes might be one. However, I don’t know if Stokes would benefit from being a captain or if that would be a good thing for English cricket.

When you look back at some of the great captains of England, like Ian Botham and Kevin Pietersen, it is clear that they all failed as captains. We all want Stokes out there to express himself.

The only solution for now is to pray that Stokes is strong enough to make it through the four Tests, manage his knee and maybe bowl a little less.

The managing director will make the appointment for the new coach. This is a big decision for someone who may not have had much experience doing similar work.
